Begwns and The Roundabout

Summary

An easy and serene walk, perfect for those Sunday mornings after breakfast. The walk gives stunning views from a different perspective of the Black mountains to the south and Brecon Beacons to the west.

Starting point – Begwns Car Park

From the hotel turn left onto the main road. Take the second left into Clyro village. At Clyro church take the road left signposted Painscastle. Follow this road up the hill and take the first left after approx half a mile. Follow this road for approx one and a half miles until you go over a cattle grid, immediately before the second cattle grid is a small parking area on your right. GR 184442 (161 Landranger Map)

The Route:
Head west away from your car and the road. The area is covered in paths, (mainly sheep tracks) as you walk you will begin to see in front of you what is known as The Roundabout (in good visability), a clump of trees surrounded by a stonewall is the highest point of the Begwns. Apparently, this was once an ancient beacon, more recently it was one of the beacons lit for the millennium. As legend has it, the small lake below was the location for the slaying of the last Dragon in Wales

Notes:
We would advise you take the appropriate footwear and clothing as well as an Ordnance Survey map and compass. Please let someone at the hotel know where you’re going and adhere to the countryside code at all times.If you have a dog, be aware that sheep are present therefore dogs should be kept on a lead. Between February and April is the lambing season, farmers can be particularly nervous of dogs loose around their flocks.

It is also possible to start from the Baskerville Hall Hotel. walk down the hotel drive and then left along the grass path. take the first left which takes you past Clyro school and eventually links up with the Begwns road.
